Sang Penari

Rating : 5/5
On Sunday 23/10 I got the chance to go to preview of "Sang Penari" (The Dancer). I knew this movie from my friend Ame, who retweeted a link of Sang Penari's trailer. Once I saw the trailer,,, speechless. All I could say that time was "I have to see this movie."
Luckily, the official Twitter of Sang Penari announced movie preview in Jakarta. Without second thought, I sent email to them and got my lucky ticket. Sang Penari was inspired by novel "Ronggeng Dukuh Paruk" by Ahmad Tohari.
Directed by Ifa Isfansyah, the story is about the life of Srintil and Rasus in their village, Dukuh Paruk. Srintil wants to be a ronggeng (dancer), as her devotion to ancestor. Rasus, who loves Srintil so much, felt that his love was taken away from him, because as ronggeng, Srintil belong to the whole village. Heartbroken, Rasus left his village and Srintil to become a soldier. When their paths crossed again, Rasus has to choose, his love to Srintil or his loyalty to the country.
All I can say about this movie is,,, very poetic. I love beautiful pictures, especially nature, and this movie offered many beautiful pictures of hills and mountains. The chemistry between Oka Antara as Rasus and Prisia Nasution as Srintil perfectly built, showed us the deep love between them and the struggle they faced. The scoring itself, I couldn't get rid of it from my brain!!! Very addictive. The property,,, soooooooooo vintage and described the 60's in small village.
The cast, I have to give big thumbs up to their totality. Prisia who danced very beautiful, Oka with his transformation from innocent man to a dedicated soldier. Whole cast spoke with Banyumasan dialect. Totally authentic, since I have friends and students from that area.
I learned many things from this movie, especially from the cultural side. Ronggeng was a profession that not every woman can achieve. As ronggeng, you have to prepare physically and mentally devoted yourself to the society. Like Nyai Kertaredja said in one of the dialogue, "Ronggeng itu tidak cuma perkara urusan nari. Tapi juga urusan kasur, urusan dapur, urusan sumur."
I kinda surprised to saw some of the scenes, where wives willingly permitted their husband to spend a night with Srintil, even accompanied and waited for husband. They even thanked Srintil for spent the night with their husband. One of the wives also gave Srintil a gift, hoped after spend a night with Srintil her husband can make her pregnant. Speechless...
I've read some reviews. I forgot from who, but I totally love the review. The review said that Sang Penari is about love but not one time the word ever came up in the whole movie, which I totally agree. For me, the love represented in many forms. Love to your culture, love to your lover, love to your ideology, love to your country. Described beautifully. The breath of this movie, love to your passion of dancing, pictured very beautifully in the last scene. My eyes got teary watched Srintil danced freely without any burden of how ronggeng must do.
I totally recommended this movie. No other words can describe this movie. Thank you so much for this beautiful movie,,,
