In the midst of the Chinese Revolution during the late 1940s, couples flee to the island of Taiwan. Three couples from different background fight for love and better future.
From what I read, this movie based on the sinking of steamer called Taiping. The ship was packed with refugees fleeing Communism to Taiwan, twice the capacity. This was the first part that focused on what happened during Chinese Civil War. The second part will be released on May 2015.
First of all, it was John Woo's movie. There's always a trademark of him, a bunch of white dove flying in slow motion. Second, realistic scenes of explosions and gunshot wounds. That's also his trademark.
Story wise,,, somehow I felt a bit flat. Reminds me of movies like Paris, I Love You where other characters were connected because of situation.
